Using Hidden Fields (Content Attribution) on a Hub Item Basis with HubSpot

If you wish, you are able to attach Hidden Field values on a per Hub Item basis (please note: Hidden Fields on a Hub Item basis, or what we call Content Attribution, is a feature only available to users on an Enterprise plan).

Finding the Right Field Name in HubSpot for Your Hidden Fields

When Are Hidden Fields Transferred? 

When using Hidden Fields, the name/value pairs you specify will be sent to a lead’s profile in HubSpot once they interact with an Item that has the Hidden Field associated with it. This can be a very effective way to  track, or attribute, the results of a specific marketing campaign you may be running. 

The cases in which the data will be passed over include:

  • When a user views an Item; 
  • When a user submits a CTA on an Item page; or 
  • When a user submits a Form CTA with a link to an Item in your Hub.

Please note that in a case where a user submits a CTA on an Item page that includes a link to another Item in your Hub (through the 'Link to Content' feature), the Form CTA linking to that Item will take priority.  

Step 1: Find The Item You Wish to Apply the Hidden Field To

In order to use a Hidden Field for a particular Item, you must go to the Stream containing the Item. To do so, navigate to to the Manage Content section of the Hubs backend.  From there, find the Item tile in question, hover over the expandable menu, and click on the spinner icon titled “Set Integration Item Parameters” (see below).  

Step 2: Modify Hidden Field

To modify or set up a Hidden Field on an item, follow the following steps that correspond with the screenshot below: 

  1. Type in the Field Name (must be API specific to HubSpot); 
  2. Type in the Field Value for the new Hidden Field name (whatever you would like the field in HubSpot to be populated with); and 
  3. When you're done, click Add


Finding the Right Field Name in HubSpot 

To find the right field name in HubSpot for your query string parameter: 

  1. Hover over Contacts in the top menu;
  2. Click on Contact Settings in the dropdown menu; and
  3. Find the property you are looking for.

The “Name” is the value that we are looking for. For example, in the below screenshot, if we wished to use a query string parameter for the field "Country", the Name would be found in the middle column, or "country" (with lower case 'c'). 

Please note that we do not do validation checking in this area, so make sure the names are correct.  If they are not, the submission of this data will be invalid. However, we perform this separately from Form CTAs so that will be preserved.



When Are Hidden Fields Transferred? 

Hidden Fields are always transferred to HubSpot when submitting a CTA that interacts with an Item featuring a Hidden Field parameter (on a Hub Item page or through a link to an Item). Remember that an Item CTA link will override being on an Item page.


Hidden Fields will also be transferred when a known user in HubSpot views a Hub Item (even if they have exhausted all possible form fields and don’t actually submit a Form CTA when viewing an Item in your Hub).  If the user is not known, these fields will not be stored or sent later; Hidden Field information is not recorded for an unknown user.
